Romanian President’s Second Mandate Depends On Coalition Govt Results

Romanian President Traian Basescu publicly admitted he had told democrat liberal leaders a month ago that unless the Government has results and curb the effects of the economic crisis on Romanians, he will not run for a new term as president.

“If I reach the conclusion that the economic crisis affects Romanians more than it should, although there is a strong majority in Parliament, of course I’m also analyzing the possibility not to run for president again, because one cannot present oneself to the people after the failure of a coalition one strongly backed – as there was no other solution. If the economic policy of the Government fails, what credibility can I have in front of the voters?!” Basescu said on the public television station TVR.

He said the economic policy of the Executive is vital in 2009, and for this reason he keeps an eye on the actions of the Government.

“I hope that after the budget is established, governing will become more coherent,” Basescu said, assuring that the Cabinet will stay in office for its entire term of four years.

He also explained how negotiations with the Social Democratic Party began in view of a Government alliance, after social democrats Mircea Geoana and Ilie Sarbu said they began two years ago.

Basescu said he first talked with Ilie Sarbu (agriculture minister) in November 2008, one month after the latter became Senate chairman, and with Geoana in September 2007, when a no-confidence motion threatened the liberal government, but which later did not pass, and talks stopped.
