Romanian Senate Labor Committee Adopts Several Amendments To Revised Pension Bill

Labor committee senators propose that the pension point, an indicator used to calculate pensions, be set annually through the social security budget law and represent at least 45% of the gross average salary considered when building the social security budget.

Senators eliminated from the pension bill the provision which includes military staff, police officers and public servants with special status, who work in penitentiary administration, national defense, public order and national safety, in the unitary public pension system.

The labor committee also adopted an amendment which sets the pension contribution period at 30 years, and not at 35 years as proposed in the pension bill. The minimum pension contribution period was also reduced to 10 years from 15 years currently.

Labor committee senators adopted with six to three votes and one abstention an amendment proposed by several social democrats, which sets at 64 the retirement age for men and at 60 the retirement age for women. Labor Minister Ioan Botis, who also attended debates in the labor committee, said he does not agree with this amendment.

The report adopted by the labor committee will be sent to the Senate for debates.

The pension bill was sent back to Parliament for reexamination by President Basescu, who requested lawmakers lower the set retirement age for women to 63 instead of 65.

The Senate's committee for legal matters decided last week that more articles of the pension bill will be reexamined, besides the article indicated by the head of state in his reexamination request.
