Nita said it is not recommendable to increase the value added tax or the tax base in general during a crisis. He added the thinks coalition partners democrat liberals will not back a VAT increase either.

The minister added the ruling coalition will talk about the social democrats’ proposition to scrap the minimum tax as of September 1, in the weekly meeting on Monday. He added budget revenues collected from the minimum tax could be replaced with an increased royalty on mineral water and certain construction materials.

Nita said democrat liberals and social democrats will discuss Monday a set of anti-crisis measures, as the International Monetary Fund is “flexible” regarding the government’s proposition to widen the country’s budget deficit projection.

The social democrat minister said the IMF’s flexibility in renegotiating macroeconomic indicators would allow the government to reconsider some of the measures in its anti-crisis program. However, the minister didn’t say which measures would be reconsidered.
