Romanian Unions Agree With RON705 Minimum Wage For 2010

Leader of the Cartel Alfa union Bogdan Hossu said Thursday, after talks held at the Labor Ministry, unions made a compromise when they agreed with a RON705 minimum wage, as they have initially demanded a RON740 minimum wage, but they will not give up their claim the minimum wage reach RON1,300 in 2014.

Leader of the National Union Bloc Dumitru Costin said he agrees with the minimum wage set up at RON705 in 2010 on condition the collective work contract and the quotients set for different work competence are observed.

President of UGIR-1903 Cezar Coraci said employers will analyze next week the possibility minimum wage be set at RON705, adding that an increase by RON105 might be too much in the current trough of recession.

General secretary of the Employers' Confederation in Industry Dan Matei Agathon said employers agree with the minimum wage raise, but can not agree with a similar raise of all wages, as it will lead to an increase of the inflation rate.

Agathon asked the Government for tax deductions so that employers pay health insurance for sums between minimum wage and RON1.000 for the next six months.

Both unions and employers said they are confident talks on minimum wage will be concluded at the meeting set for Monday.

Interim Labor Minister Gheorghe Pogea and secretary of state Valentin Mocanu Thursday held talks with social partners to set the minimum wage for 2010.
