In turn, the Chamber’s press office announced in a press release, following media frenzy on the controversial law increasing teachers’ wages, that the law was sent to the Official Gazette and will be subject to all legal publishing procedures.

Romanian President Traian Basescu approved on Friday passed the law increasing teachers’ wages by 50% as of Oct 1.

Early October, the Romanian Parliament adopted a 50% wage increase for education system employees. Following the decision, the Government contested the law at the Romanian Constitutional Court, but the Court decided the law was constitutional.

Mid-October, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said such an increase cannot be supported financially and would trigger a major crisis in the Romanian economy.
