Mihalcioiu said the three Romanian nationals left the country most likely for a crew exchange and once in China, were abandoned on the airport in Dalian, near the North Korean border.

Mihalcioiu, who is also the leader of the Free Union of Navigators, said none of the three is a union member and they left on their own.

He added the sailors contacted a crewing agency on their own.

"The three sailors have been in the Dalian for the past two days, they haven’t eaten in 24 hours and have no money left. They contacted their families and asked them to look for the person who sent them on the trip, but no one answered the phone," Mihalcioiu said.

He added he contacted the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an attempt to bring the sailors home.

"They need some EUR5,000 for plane tickets, which they don’t have," Mihalcioiu said, adding he will do everything in his power to help the three.
