Romanian Govt Decides Spouses Of Insured People Must Contribute Or Lose Health Insurance

The Government decided that retirees with monthly pensions higher than 740 lei (EUR1=RON4.3006) and people who took part in the 1989 revolution, except those who were injured, will pay 5.5% as their contribution to the social health insurance system starting January 2011.

The ordinance excludes the husband, wife and parents without their own income, who are in the care of an insured person, from the category of people receiving healthcare without paying a contribution. According to the Government, 937,000 people will stop being insured through the public healthcare system, as of January 1, 2011.

The Government expects to collect RON1.4 billion yearly after implementing these measures.
