EXCLUSIVE: Romanian Opposition Drafts Bills To Cut Number Of Lawmakers, Ban Political Migration

People in the Social Democratic Party told MEDIAFAX Monday the opposition has drafted three bills amending the country's current election regulations, in response to the Constitution revision process proposed by the President's office.

The sources said one of the bills targets cutting the number of lawmakers to maximum 300, as Romanians decided in a referendum in 2009.

Another bill sets that lawmakers are to be elected uninominally, in a single round of elections, like mayors. Under the bill, the candidates gaining the largest number of votes in their respective constituencies should win the MP seat.

A third bill put forth by the Social Liberal Union targets a ban on political migration and a lawmaker elected while member of a political party loses their MP seat in case of resignation from the respective party.
