Hungarian President Arrives In Romania

Solyom is expected to reach Miercurea Ciuc Saturday afternoon and head for Cozmeni afterward where he will meet with Marko Bela, head of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), and Hungarian MEP Tokes Laszlo.

According to Borboly Csaba, head of the Harghita County Council, Solyom will leave Cozmeni and head for Varful Nyerges where he will attend the inauguration of the commemorative monument he ordered, which will be placed near the monuments erected by Harghita’s neighboring counties in memory of martyrs of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution.

Solyom will return to Cozmeni to hold a press conference around 17:00 and afterward, will head for Budapest where he will preside over official events on Sunday.

Solyom was planning to leave for Transylvania, central Romania, after the official ceremonies of the Hungarian national holiday on Sunday, March 15, but changed the date of his planned festive visit on Sunday afternoon to Romania to Saturday afternoon because the Romanian Air Authorities withdrew the prior authorized landing permission at Targu Mures, in the center of Transylvania.

Romanian authorities recently advised Solyom that his visit would not be well-timed, given his intention to support territorial self-determination, according to information obtained by UDMR and contained in a statement on Wednesday.

Solyom's office said the President, in agreement with the Hungarian government, is convinced that visits to neighboring countries contribute to enhancing trust between neighbors and fighting prejudice.
