"France expelled over 7,000 Romanians in 2008 alone, while Italy only expelled about 40. In this context, Romanian authorities need to assure us there will be no more Romanian delinquents on our streets," Frattini said in Brussels, Belgium, before the start of the meeting of the Council for General Affairs and Foreign Relations (CAGRE).

"We consider Romania and absolute strategic partner. I was one of Romania’s main supporters in the European Union,” added Frattini, a former EU commissioner for Justice and Interior Affairs.

Earlier Monday, Frattini said Italy will continue to accept Romanians who work and observe laws, but will take harsh measures against delinquents.
Frattini will have a meeting with Romanian foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu Monday afternoon in Rome.
