“PSD’s attack on the rule of law, unprecedented within the last 30 years, poses the risk of weakening the status of our country in NATO and the EU. Amending laws to suit certain individuals, demagogy, attacks on economic stability, the rise of inflation and currency devaluation, its lack of professionalism, these are the political realities of the PSD governances (…) If we add its inability to modernize legislation for national security we have only several aspects which shows PSD’s incompetence and a serious lack of understanding what it means to rule a state,” said Iohannis in his speech during the session.

The head of state also called for internal political cohesion, in face of what he called “complex threats” against NATO.

Klaus Iohannis was not formally greeted by the heads of the Parliament’s chambers, Liviu Dragnea and Calin Popescu Tariceanu, and did not interact during his presence at the session with them or PM Viorica Dancila.

This comes as tensions between the presidency and the ruling PSD-ALDE coalition reached an apex over the subject of judicial reform in the country, with the president decided to call a referendum presumably meant to limit the government’s powers to alter judicial and criminal laws by emergency decrees.

The president and the prime minister took part on Tuesday at a common solemn session of the Romanian Parliament, marking 70 years since the founding of NATO and 15 since Romania’s accession to the alliance.
