Romania Makes It Into 2009 Eurovision Song Contest Final

Romania's contender for the Eurovision 2009 Song Contest, Elena Gheorghe, and her song "The Balkan Girls" qualified for the Eurovision final to take place Saturday, May 16, after the first semi-final held Tuesday night at the Olimpiyskiy Arena in Moscow.

Gheorghe was among the ten performers selected by the European audience to go to the final on May 16.

Nine qualifying countries were picked by televoting, and a tenth finalist was selected by the national juries all over Europe.

The list of countries that qualified for the Eurovision 2009 Song Contest final on May 16, after the semi-final in Olimpiyskiy Arena, includes Turkey, Sweden, Israel, Portugal, Malta, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Armenia, and Iceland.

The remaining 10 finalists will be known after the second semi-final to take place Thursday night, May 14.

Local media have reported that the Russian capital has spent about USD42 million preparing for the competition, making it one of the most expensive ever Eurovision shows.

The venue of the competition, Olympiyski Indoor Arena, has an impressive record of hosting major TV events in recent years and was transformed into a giant concert hall ready to host the Eurovision contest.
