“Citizens don’t seem too willing to turn in their old cars through the Junker program. This is rather obvious, given the economic crisis. Therefore, I believe it would be a good idea to extend the program so that it includes companies as well,” Nemirschi said.

However, this needs to be approved by the Ministry of Finance.

“I, as minister of environment, am interested in taking junkers off roads. I don’t mind giving the money, namely 3,800 lei (EUR1-RON4.1189) to the companies. However, I need authorization from the Finance Ministry to make this possible. We have to see how the subsidies will be perceived in their case, if it is going to be state aid or if a new formula will be used,” Nemirschi mentioned.

Nemirschi said the Junker program could also include old tractors as of next year, upon talks with the Agriculture Minister.

The Romanian government decided to up the threshold of the vehicle scrapping program to 60,000 cars from the 40,000 car cap in 2008 and increased the scrapping bonus to RON3,800 from RON3,000 previously.
