He also welcomed the Romanian Environment Ministry's proposition to use three vouchers worth 3,800 lei (EUR1=RON4.2495) in order to buy a new vehicle, saying it is the right solution to renew the country's car park and support the local automotive industry.

Valmar also said the introduction of vouchers also implies risks, considering there are many criminal rings expert in forging banknotes of EUR100, adding, however, the authorities' must find a way to secure these vouchers.

He also stressed that automakers must be very careful with investments in distribution and personnel networks, because the decline in the automotive market entails downsizing activities.

New car registrations in Romania fell 59.4% on the year to 81,857 units in the first eight months of 2009, while used car registrations were up 8.1% on the year, to 152,620 units, according to the country's driving license and car registration authority.

In August alone, new car registrations were down 71.8% on the year, to 8,591 units, compared with 30,528 units in August 2008, while used car registrations were down 58.9%, to 12,080 units, compared with 29,393 units in August 2008.
