Pacuraru said he saw the prosecutor’s report asking that the Presidency approve the start of the criminal investigation against him. However, the minister argued that the document does not contain anything that could incriminate him.
He said that, according to the report, he is charged with tacitly approving alleged services offered to him by Dan Ilie Morega, the head of the Groj branch of the Liberal Party.
The official said that prosecutors hold as evidence a phone conversation recorded between himself and Morega in which the latter said: “If your son is ever in Gorj, tell him to drop by my house.”
Pacuraru said this is the only evidence prosecutors hold against him. However, the minister said that Morega had offered to help his son Mihnea Pacuraru regarding a certain contract. Nonetheless, the minister added his son politely refused the Gorj head as he had already won the bid involving the respective contract.
Pacuraru refused to disclose the value of the contracts obtained by his son in Gorj county.
On September 24, 2007 the chief prosecutor of the Anticorruption Department asked that the president require the start of criminal investigation against Nicolae Paul Anton Păcuraru under charges of bribe-taking.
