Buda said that according to the draft Civil Code adopted following debates on Wednesday, Romania only accepts marriages between man and woman.

"We’ve explicitly stipulated that marriage can only be performed between a man and a woman, eliminating the possibility of same sex marriage. We also stipulated that same sex marriages are not recognized on Romanian territory,” Buda said.

Romanian Prime Minister said Wednesday “there is a high chance” that the government take responsibility in Parliament for the adoption of the country’s revised Civil Code and the Criminal Code, stressing a final decision will be made upon talks with civil society representatives.

The draft Criminal Code was adopted Wednesday, with majority of votes, by the legislative sub-committee working on the legal codes. The head of the sub-committee, Victor Ponta, said this is a totally new draft compared with the one drawn up by the government, adding it will be debated in the plenary Senate meeting early next week.
