Romania’s Heating System Leaks EUR500M – Econ Min

Romania is involuntarily contributing to global warming because of losses in its heating system, which near EUR500 million each year, Economy Minister Adriean Videanu said Wednesday.

„Throughout the entire chain, from production to the end user, our evaluations show a loss of some EUR500 million,” Videanu said after the government meeting.

He said the transfer of thermal power producers from local authorities to the ministry is one of his priorities, because, aside from CO2 emissions, „there are wide financial losses on this segment.”

The Romanian Government decided in 2002 to transfer several thermal power producers from the Economy Ministry to local authorities.

Many of the plants are now facing financial problems and are inefficient because of their obsolete equipments, while mayoralties lack funds to upgrade them.
