Romanian Govt To Assign RON200M For Nursing Homes

The Labor Ministry published on its website Tuesday the methodology for the evaluation, approval and allotment of funding for a national program that targets the development of the country's network of nursing homes.

The program targets restructuring a number of hospital units and turning them into nursing homes. The program will unfold for 33 months, from April 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013.

The state will fund the current expenses and staff expenses of newly-founded nursing homes, by applying cost standards.

The Government has drawn up a list of 67 hospitals that will be turned into nursing homes. These hospitals employ 677 doctors and 2,085 nurses.

The Labor Ministry said Romania currently has 130 nursing homes, some backed by local authorities, others by non-governmental organizations or private companies, which accommodate 7,154 senior citizens. Romania has 4,180 senior citizens on waiting lists for spots in nursing homes.
