Romanian Independent Candidate Potarca Notifies OSCE On His Contestation To Election Law

Romanian independent candidate Ninel Potarca voted on Sunday, despite the Constitutional Court not answering his contestation of the elections, and announced he has notified the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and will address the European Court of Human Rights.

Potarca said that, as an independent candidate standing for the interests of the Roma minority, he was "discriminated" against, having no representatives in polling stations. He challenged the law regarding elections before the Constitutional Court.

Potarca further argued he was "discriminated", complaining that he was unable to carry out his election campaign on equal terms with the other candidates, because TV stations did not invite all of them on the air at the same time.

"The Court should have replied by 11.40 a.m., as per the law, 48 hours after the contestation was submitted. I said the law on elections is unconstitutional and you will see I was right. I have already notified the OSCE about this and will also address the European Court of Human Rights," Potarca said.

The independent candidate said he voted for Romania.

About 18 million eligible voters are expected to cast ballots Sunday to elect a new president and say whether they want the country's Parliament downsized to a single chamber and a maximum 300 lawmakers instead of the current 471. Polls close at GMT1900.
