Nica said that following talks with the Finance Ministry, compensatory sums will be granted to cover the price hikes in fuel used for heating.

He told unionists that the ministry will rent houses within the limits of the existing budget in different localities in the country for police officers in charge of long-term missions.

Nica did not give details about the sums involved, but pointed out that the situation will be analyzed to see what things can be given up to enable the rent.

Nica said the ministry cannot afford to pay overtime work, adding that in some localities the extra working hours show defective management. The minister said the deficit of 8,000 employees in the system cannot be covered.

Marian Gruia, head of the National Union of Police Officers, showed partial satisfaction with the results of today’s talks with the interior minister and said he hopes other solutions will be found after the meeting with President Traian Basescu.

“We’re not fully pleased by the meeting with the minister today (Thursday -e.n.) and we hope to find solutions to the worsening problems caused by shortage of funds in talks with the president”, Gruia said.

However, the meeting between Basescu and the unionists’ leaders scheduled for Thursday at 11 am was cancelled, as a union representative disagreed with the participation of both police unions in the talks.
