Romanian Lawmakers Amended Rules To Allow Prosecution Of Ex Ministers With Simple Majority

The Chamber’s rules so far required a two third majority to approve prosecution of former government members.

Chamber of Deputies speaker Roberta Anastase said last week the Chamber standing office will postpone a decision on the approval of criminal proceedings against former social democrat prime minster Adrian Nastase, to give the Chamber time to amend regulations.

Under the new rules, prosecutors’ request to start proceedings against Nastase on charges of corruption may be approved with the votes of the majority of lawmakers present.

Early February, lawmakers rejected the start of criminal proceedings in a corruption case against Nastase.
