Romanian Leftist Opposition Proposes Single Environment Tax

Social democrats propose to replace the current three environmental taxes by a single tax, to be levied on automotive manufacturers and importers depending on the vehicles’ level of pollution. Tax collections would be considered revenues of the Environment Ministry.

PSD also proposes the elimination of the tax on pollution from mobile sources paid by corporations and the urgent elimination of the environmental component of the road toll.

PSD considers the first registration tax for cars could be considered an environmental measure if it were applied for all old cars. However, PSD said, the tax was introduced by the Environment Ministry to compensate the budget revenue lost with the elimination of certain taxes after Romania’s accession to the European Union. Moreover, the tax is backed by the Ministry of Finance and the money goes to the state budget, not to the Environment Ministry.
