Romanian Opp Social Democrats, Unions To Meet For Alternative Anti-Crisis Plan Thursday

Dragnea said the meeting's main objective is to find anti-crisis measures different from those put forward by the Government, so that the Executive's austerity plan would not be applied. The results of the talks will be discussed in a new meeting on Friday.

The social democrat pointed out that fellow party members who will join the protests on Wednesday, May 19, will do so as simple citizens. "It is possible that some of our members, who may be affected by these measures, could be in [Victoriei] Square, but this is not a PSD action," Dragnea said.

PSD president Victor Ponta said Monday that his party has decided to express its solidarity with the protests scheduled for Wednesday and lend its support to everyone taking part in the action.

Romanian unionists will decide after the rally on either a full-blown strike on May 25, or demonstrations similar to those in Greece, blocking Victoriei Square (where the Government is located) every day, said Bogdan Hossu, leader of the Cartel Alfa union confederation.
