Romanian Opposition Challenges Labor Code At Constitutional Court

Romania’s opposition Social Liberal Union on Thursday challenged the constitutionality of the country’s new Labor Code, adopted Wednesday as the Government survived a vote of no-confidence in Parliament.

The opposition contests the adoption procedure of the Labor Code, for which the Government sought a confidence vote and by-passed parliamentary debates, but also claims the new law breaches constitutional rights to work, take vacations and go on strike.

The claim submitted to the Constitutional Court is signed by 112 lawmakers of the Social Democratic, Liberal and Conservative parties, said social democrat MP Mircea Dusa.

Government on Wednesday survived a motion of no-confidence filed by the opposition, which failed to acquire the necessary votes, meaning the new Labor Code is closer to becoming law.

The motion needed 236 votes to pass, but received only 211. A mere 216 MPs cast valid ballots in all, whether for or against.
