Romanian PM Asks Unions To Forget About Bonuses Provided By Collective Work Contracts

Boc met Wednesday with a delegation of unionists protesting in front of the prefect's office in Iasi, eastern Romania, where the Government is holding its weekly meeting this Wednesday.

The prime minister said investigations made by the Court of Accounts revealed that collective labor contracts stipulate various wage bonuses which are not provided by labor legislation and insisted they must be eliminated by implementing the unitary wage law.

More than 250 people affiliated with the "Spiru Haret" and Sanitas unions protested in front of the Iasi County Hall, while Prime Minister Boc was in a meeting with local administration officials. "Spiru Haret" president Gheorghe Izvoranu said teachers oppose wage cuts in the education system and demand the application of court decisions providing salary increases.

Boc told the unionists that talks would continue, but that reforms must be implemented if Romania is to recover from the economic crisis.
