"The leftist opposition has a clear agenda to win the elections, but has no governing agenda," Tariceanu told reporters at the government Monday.

He reminded that an agreement with unions is to be signed Tuesday regarding wages in the public sector. The prime minister added wages would be increased responsibly in the upcoming period, if economic conditions allow such moves.

Last week, Tariceanu called on education unions and teachers Monday to act responsibly, saying going on a strike is not the right thing to do and wages cannot be increased by 50%, adding he will not accept to use funds earmarked for investments to increase wages.

Education unionists went on warning strike for two hours Monday and the Senate is expected to vote on the government ordinance putting off teachers’ wage hikes until April 1, 2009.

The parliament also debates Monday a no-confidence motion submitted by democrat liberals, also prompted by the government’s decision to postpone wage hikes for employees in the education sector.
