“I have seen the inefficiency of the current peacekeeping mechanisms in South Ossetia, Abkhazia and, I must add in Transdniester and NagornoKarabakh (…). Keeping the current peace mechanisms could worsen frozen conflicts. Romania stands by EU’s search for new mechanisms to maintain peace and for resolutions to frozen conflicts,” Basescu said at the end of his meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.

Basescu said that neither the EU states nor the U.N. have reasons to maintain the current peace mechanisms.

Ukraine has a similar stance on the matter, Yushchenko said, mentioning the peace forces in Caucasus were inefficient in solving the conflict.

Romanian President Traian Basescu and foreign minister Lazar Comanescu embarked Wednesday on a two-day tour of five countries to discuss the Georgian-Russian conflict and its impact on the region.

After his meeting with Yushchenko, Basescu will leave for Chisinau to meet Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin.

On Thursday, the Romanian head of state will visit Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
