Romanian Prosecutors Detain 15 IT Crime Suspects

Fifteen people had been detained earlier Wednesday following searches in homes of people suspected of having hacked into servers of universities in the United States, NASA and illegally cloned websites of banks in the European Union to get credit card information.

The number of arrests might increase, as searches haven’t ended, said chief prosecutor Mircea Andres, who coordinates organized crime prosecutors in the western region of the country.

Prosecutors searched homes of suspects in the counties of Timis (western Romania), Caras-Severin (southwest) and Hunedoara (central Romania).

"Following the action this morning and raids in the homes of people suspected of having cloned websites of banks and hacked into computers of universities in the United States and NASA, fifteen people have been detained so far. They will be heard by prosecutors,” Andres said, adding the number of detainees may rise as searches are ongoing.
