Romanian Social Democrats To Submit Motion Against Transport Minister Wednesday

Toma stressed that liberals' motion will most likely be discussed and voted next Tuesday, adding that, soon after the vote, social democrats will submit their own motion against Berceanu.

Former Education Minister Andrei Marga on Monday said liberals' motion has been concluded and it targets four key problems the country's education system is facing, namely planned layoffs and the budget allotted to the education sector, the unitary wage law and the draft education law.

Earlier Monday, social democrat head Victor Ponta said his party will submit with the Senate a simple motion against Transport Minister Radu Berceanu.

Ponta also said that social democrats will also push for the setting up of a committee to look into the activity unfolded by the country's Transport Ministry over the past years.

Ponta underscored it is highly necessary to know exactly how billions of state budget funds are spent for highways and repair works that are simply fictive in most cases or costs that are way too high, stressing there is never money for the education, healthcare or social assistance.

Mid-March this year, the Romanian Senate's Standing Office approved the setting up of a committee to look into the activity unfolded by the Transport Ministry from 2005 to 2009.

The future committee will have 11 members, compared with the initial proposition for nine members.

The future committee will investigate the legitimacy of contracts concluded by the ministry, namely, subsequent changes in their value following alterations in the initial technical solutions, for the projects unfolded by the ministry and the country's public roads authority CNADNR during 2005-2009.
