Romanian Suspended Craiova Mayor To Be Tried For Corruption In Custody

On Thursday, before the court assembled, about 50 supporters of the mayor gathered outside the courthouse singing and reciting poetry and demanding the official's release.

The Supreme Court decided on July 7 to move the trial to Galati in eastern Romania, from Arges, in southern Romania, near Craiova.

Solomon has been under arrest since March 3 and subsequently denied release on parole or bail. He is accused of having taken a EUR50,000 bribe from a major shareholder of the local PIC company. The former mayor is charged with repeated bribe taking and intellectual forgery.

Solomon was suspended from public office following his arrest and said late May he intends to resign from the position of mayor and leader of the Democratic Liberal Party branch in Craiova. The indicted mayor said repeatedly he wants to be investigated at large as he poses no social threat.
