Romanian Transporters, Roads Auth Disagree On Toll For Bridge Over Danube

FORT has already notified the European Commission on the introduction of the toll.

“Desperate over the loss of control and power and the possibility to levy a toll on overweight vehicles following the legislative amendments set up by FORT representatives with the Transport Ministry, the public roads authority wants to prove its efficiency by coming up with an order whose article 1 item 5 last year, in the context of the talks between the transport employers’ associations and the ministry, would have heated up the situation,” the statement said.

The EU agreed with the introduction of bridge toll, but didn’t accept the possibility to introduce subscriptions, head of the roads and highways company Dorina Tiron told MEDIAFAX Monday.

“We’ve talked about this toll with the European Union and it agreed with it. A subscription replacing the toll was possible, but the EU disagreed, so we removed it,” Tiron said.

Regarding the notification sent by FORT to the European Commission, Tiron said anyone has the right to send notifications.

“It’s their right, it’s their viewpoint, everyone is free to send notification. I do not contradict Mr. Hagiu (Augustin Hagiu, FORT head –e.n.), but we didn't breach anything. The minister order was not issued by chance,” Tiron said.

Drivers must pay as of Monday a toll to cross the Fetest-Cernavoda Bridge. The toll, set depending on the type of vehicle, amounts to 10 lei for cars (EUR1=RON4.2116).

Drivers will pay RON7 for motorcycles, RON10 for cars and RON35 for minibuses and vehicles with a maximum weight below 12 tons.

The tax was set at RON47 for buses or vehicles with a maximum weight larger or equaling 12 tons and with minimum three axes.

Drivers have to pay RON68 for trucks with maximum total authorized weight larger or equaling 12 tons and with minimum four axes, according to the road company.

The amounts were set by order of former transport minister Ludovic Orban in February 2008 and are applied to vehicles registered in Romania or in other states, for each crossing regardless of the lane.

Liberal lawmaker Cristina Pocora on Sunday asked transport minister Radu Berceanu to eliminate the fee for the use of the bridge for locals in Fetesti and to introduce a subscription with minimum costs, as for the daily use of the bridge a person would have to pay RON500 a month.
