Romanian Unions Mull 50,000-People Rally In Bucharest During No-Conf Motion Debates

CNSLR-Fratia union leader Marius Petcu told MEDIAFAX Tuesday union members will be ready for such a demonstration on October 27, adding all union leaders have agreed on protests in principle, but a final decision will be made in the upcoming days.

"I will argue in favor of holding this demonstration on the day the Parliament debates the no-confidence motion because it would have a bigger impact," Petcu said.

Cartel Alfa union vice-president Liviu Apostoiu said unions are planning a protest outside the Government building followed by a march up to the Parliament building.

Romania's opposition parties submitted a no-confidence motion in Parliament Monday, hoping to bring down the center-right coalition Government led by Emil Boc. The opposition needs the votes of at least 236 lawmakers of the 471-seat Parliament to oust the Government. Opposition parties currently have a total 214 seats in Parliament.

Romania implemented a series of austerity measures this summer, including a 25% pay cut in the public sector, to keep the budget deficit in check and make sure its EUR20 billion aid package from the International Monetary Fund and other lenders stays on track.
