Romania Romtelecom To Lay Off 600 Staff In May To Improve Efficiency

Romania’s leading hard-line telecom operator Romtelecom, majority owned by Greece's OTE, plans to lay off 600 employees to cut costs and improve efficiency, the phone company said in a statement Thursday.

The layoffs, targeting staff at its Operations division, will be effective as of May 1, Romtelecom said.

It said all canned employees will receive compensatory payments, „double the amount stipulated in their existing collective labor contract.”

„Romanian telecom market is one of the most competitive in Europe, so Romtelecom faces an exponential pressure. In addition, the economic decline takes a toll on all operators,” the phone company said.

In January, Romtelecom transferred 400 workers to Ericsson Romania, following a five-year partnership agreement between the two companies.

Romtelecom operates approximately 3 million phone lines in Romania and employs 9,600 staff.
