U.S. Official Assures Romanian PM Of Support For Visa Waiver Program

U.S. House of Representatives member Ellen Tauscher assured Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu of her support for Romania to be included in the Visa Waiver Program.

Tariceanu said excellent bilateral relations between Romania and the United States justify such a move.
 
In his discussion with Ellen Tauscher during the Transatlantic Forum Bucharest Conference, the Romanian prime minister gave assurance Romania is determined to have an important role for stability in the region, adding that NATO’s enlargement with nations in the Western Balkans would be positive.
 
"In the meeting, the Romanian prime minister posed the issue of romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program. The excellent bilateral relations with the United States, collaboration under political, military and economic aspects are strong arguments for Romania to be included in the program. Ellen Tauscher said she would support Romania’s bid for inclusion,” the government said in a statement.
 
Also Wednesday, U.S. president George W. Bush said understands Romanians’ frustrations with the need for visas to travel to the U.S. He added he tried to convince the Congress to modernize the visa law.
 
The law has been amended, he said, but still includes obstacles for countries such as Romania.
 
The U.S. president assured Basescu they would collaborate so as to observe the American law while improving the situation for Romanians who plan to visit relatives in the U.S., for instance.
