PD, PLD merger sparks discontent in both parties

Top leaders of PD and PLD took everybody by surprise as they announced the merger of their parties and the establishment of a new centre-right party, the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL). Leaders of the two parties are to convene in separate meetings today to approve the merger, after the decision in principle was made at a party summit level Monday night. Meetings with branch leaders are expected to be rather heated, as tension grows fuelled by the discontent sparked by the surprising merger announcement.

The announcement came unexpectedly, after Monday at noon the Democratic leader was making vague statements about the establishment of a new party with Theodor Stolojan’s people.
