Fifty-Three Border Police In E Romania Brought In For Questioning

Fifty-three border police officers, including the head of the local border police, from the Albita border crossing point in eastern Romania were taken in for questioning Monday following raids at the customs point and suspects’ homes.

People close to the investigation said the officers are suspected of bribe taking and cigarette smuggling. The 53 officers, including their chief-commissioner, Daniel Corban, will be taken in for questioning in capital Bucharest.

The sources said no customs workers have been taken in for questioning.

Authorities raided Monday morning homes and offices of border police and customs workers in Albita customs, eastern Romania, where dozens are suspected of bribe taking and cigarette smuggling. Traffic through the border crossing point, one of the most important and busiest crossing points in eastern Romania, was halted throughout the raids.

Early February, authorities arrested 59 border police and customs workers at the Siret crossing point in northeastern Romania on charges of corruption and contraband. Also, 90 people have been arrested under the same charges following raids through five border crossing points in western Romania.

The raids are prompted by a decision the country's High Council for Defense adopted in June 2010 in a bid to crack down on tax evasion and contraband.
