Kelemen: A new nomination of Orban as prime minister means the president wants early elections

A new nomination of Ludovic Orban as prime minister by president Klaus Iohannis means the head of state wants to direct things towards early elections, says Kelemen Hunor. UDMR does not support forming a majority around the Social-Democratic Party (PSD), nor a prime minister supported by PSD.

Kelemen: A new nomination of Orban as prime minister means the president wants early elections

UDMR's president Kelemen Hunor has told MEDIAFAX on Thursday that the Union will participate at the Cotroceni held consultations and will see what is the president's proposal for prime minister.

"What I can say is that we will not have a proposal for prime minister. Also, we will not support the creation of a majority around the PSD, nor a prime minister supported by the PSD. If Ludovic Orban will be proposed again as prime minister, we will see. If president Iohannis comes with this proposal, he wants to push things towards early elections. It is unlikely for one to have logical arguments after Wednesday's 261 votes against, and the day after to think there will be 233 votes for", Kelemen has said.

According to him, the ball is in the field of president Klaus Iohannis and it remains to be seen how he wants to handle the situation.

"After those 25 emergency decrees, things change a little and we do not know what their legal and judicial situation is, nor how the electoral law changes. This is because they had not had the opinions of the Legislative Council, and without them they cannot be published in the Official Monitor. If, however, the respective emergency decree appears, it must be attacked at the Constitutional Court (CCR) by the Ombudsman because the Government changes the rules of the game radically during the game", the UDMR president has said.

Kelemen has explained that important things have changed in the electoral law, so that everyone can vote where they want, which is not allright: "In that emergency decree it is said that local and parliamentary elections are held on the same day, although there is a ban from the Constitutional Court and a recommendation from the Venice Commission which the Government is ignoring. Until these things are clarified by the Constitutional Court, it is unlikely that you will go quietly to early elections, although the elections are desirable and maybe would solve the government crisis that lasts for 8 years".

PNL has decided to go to the Cotroceni consultations with the same formula of ministers, liberal sources have said on Thursday for MEDIAFAX. Ludovic Orban will be the Liberals' proposal to be nominated by president Klaus Iohannis, both in the first and at a possible second round of consultations.

According to the Liberals' calculations, the vote for the first Cabinet proposal should be organized around February 24-25, sources added.

Klaus Iohannis is having discussions on Thursday, at Cotroceni Palace, with the parties' leaders, on the appointment of a new government. Thus, at 12:00, the head of state will discuss with PNL representatives, and he will be having consultations during the day with PSD, USR, UDMR, PMP, Pro Romania representatives, but also with the minorities group.
