Romania's January Annual Inflation, Highest In EU

Romania posted the highest inflation in the European Union for the sixth consecutive month in January, while the EU average rate was stable at 2.7%, official data showed Monday.

A year earlier, the EU inflation was 1.7%, EU's statistics office Eurostat said.

Romanian annual inflation reached 7% in January, followed by Estonia (5.1%) and Greece (4.9%), while the lowest annual rates were observed in Ireland (0.2%) and Sweden (1.4%).

The lowest 12-month averages up to January were registered in Ireland (-1.4%), Latvia (-0.7%) and Slovakia (2%) and the highest in Romania (6.2%), Greece (4.9%) and Hungary (4.5%).

Romanian consumer prices rose 0.8% in January compared with the month earlier. EU's monthly inflation was -0.4%.

Annual inflation in the 16 states that use the euro was 2.3% in January, up from 2.2% in the previous month. A year earlier, eurozone's rate was 0.9%.
