Romanian Constitutional Court Clears Reexamined Pension Law

Romania’s Constitutional Court Wednesday ruled the pension law reexamined and adopted by the Parliament at the president’s request is constitutional, rejecting opposition liberals’ claims.

Liberals challenged the law on December 8 saying it discriminates between men and women by setting different retirement ages.

"This law is clearly unconstitutional from out point of view, according to this law, women will have a smaller pension then men because they will contribute to the system for a shorter period," said liberal Eugen Nicolaescu at that time.

The Romanian Parliament on December 7 adopted the IMF-required pension law that the head of state had sent back for reexamination, requesting that the retirement age be set at 63 for women and 65 for men.

The bill was adopted with 172 votes in favor and the only amendment was brought to the article regarding retirement age, as the president had requested.

The bill needs to be signed by President Traian Basescu into law.
