Dismissed Bucharest Prefect Appointed Counsellor To Mayor

The controversial former Bucharest Prefect, Speranta Cliseru, was appointed contractual counsellor on issues of mobility and infrastructure for Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea, Bucharest Town Hall representatives told MEDIAFAX.

The former prefect is known as an associate of Firea, previously serving as her personal counselor and as public administrator of the city of Voluntari, whose mayor, Florentin Pandele, is Firea’s husband.

Cliseru was dismissed by the Government from the office of prefect on December 20, 2018.

The former prefect became notorious following the August 10, 2018 anti-government rally in Bucharest, when the Romanian Gendarmerie announced that she signed an order to disperse protesters following violent clashes with the Gendarmerie.

However, Cliseru publicly stated that she signed the order after the Gendarmerie’s intervention took place. Currently, the Gendarmerie intervention commander is accused by military prosecutors, among other charges, of abuse of office, as he is considered to have coerced Cliseru into signing the decree.
