Flu Epidemic: Death Toll Hits 89 As Two More Victims Confirmed

The death toll of Romania’s ongoing flu epidemic reached 89 on Wednesday morning, after two more people were confirmed by the National Public Health Institute (INSP) to have succumbed to the virus.

A 94-year old woman from Bucharest died on February 3 and was confirmed with type A influenza, subtype H3. She had not received a flu shot and was suffering from other conditions.

Another victim was a 51-year old man from Prahova county, who was diagnosed with type A influenza, subtype H1 and died on February 5. Contrary to the large majority of victims this season, the man was not found to have other medical conditions, but had also not received a flu shot.

The new cases bring the number of deaths caused by the disease up to 89 of the season; nearly all of the victims were diagnosed with other ailments and were not administered flu shots.

Romania’s Health Ministry declared a flu epidemic last week, following three consecutive weeks in which the number of cases surpassed estimates.
