President: Plagiarism Is a Form of Thievery, But Politicians Think It Is Allowed

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said on Friday, during an event at the Western University in Timisoara, that plagiarism is a form of thievery, which helps “thieves” climb to important administration offices due to societal and academic tolerances towards the phenomenon.

When asked during the event if he thought of a mechanism to stop plagiarism, the president said that such a mechanism already exists, but must be helped by the state.

“The mechanism already exists, it is called autonomous universities, very simple. Until this mechanism will be trained, the state must also lend a hand. I think this is the biggest problem. Plagiarism isn’t limited to us, it exists in other areas but, and I’m talking about strong democracies, if there are concerns that a politician plagiarized, he abandons politics,” said the president.

“Some even had a brilliant political career and left, no one had to tell them to retire because they are thieves. Here, thieves have climbed at the top of the state and this is only possible due to society and the academic circle tolerating plagiarism, which is a form of thievery if tolerated,” Iohannis added.

The head of state also said that Romanian politicians mostly think plagiarism is allowed, and argued that any individual proven guilty of plagiarism should be stripped of his title and any benefits obtained from it.
