The president will hold a speech promoting the referendum he called on matters related to the judicial system, which will be held at the same time with European Parliament elections on May 26, according to the sources.

The same sources also added that the head of state could be present at a rally scheduled by the liberals on May 18 in Bucharest’s Victory Square, where the president’s former party aims to gather at least 50,000 in attendance.

The referendum in question will ask Romanian citizens if the agree with a ban on future amnesty and pardoning for corruption offences, and another one on the government’s ability to adopt emergency decrees in the field of offences, sentences and judicial organization, as well as extending the right to challenge the executive’s decrees at the Constitutional Court, currently exclusive to the country’s ombudsman.
