Romania’s for safety authority ANSVSA had banned recalling products from stores in view of reprocessing or redistribution to other stores, decision against EU norms.

The current draft stipulates that the recall of products from stores infringes the law only if it fails to observe food safety norms.

The current legislation sanctions salespeople who refuse to return the merchandise to producers, irrespective of the quality and safety of the respective food products.

Thus, according to the current legislation, a bread producer who wishes to withdraw the expired merchandise from shelves and reuse it to produce rusk, would not be allowed to do so.

However, the European norms stipulate processors are allowed, under strict terms, to withdraw their merchandise from the shelves to reprocess it, said president of the Romanian food sector federation Romalimenta Sorin Minea.
