Romanian President Advances Three New Draft Laws In Education

The Romanian commission in charge with drawing up the country’s strategy in education has completed three draft laws in the field, President Traian Basescu told unionists in a meeting Thursday.

The commission, run by former Education Minister Mircea Miclea, has come up with three draft laws: a framework law on continuous education, a law on pre-university education and a law on university education.

“I take responsibility over them, as the result of the Commission (work),” Basescu told union officials.

However, the acts will not become official until the executive has analyzed them, Basescu said.

“I don’t ask you to pronounce on them, I cannot pronounce on them either,” he mentioned, adding that he liked the draft laws.

Basescu did not make any comments on the strike Romanian teachers scheduled for next Tuesday.

On Thursday, Basescu received at the presidential Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest the representatives of education unions FSLI, Alma Mater and Spiru Haret.

The talks were attended by Prime Minister Emil Boc, Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu, presidential adviser for education and research Cristian Preda and Mircea Miclea, president of the Commission for the Strategy in Education.
