Romanian President Rejects Ties To Former PM Prosecution

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Monday dismissed allegations of having ordered arrests while in office and said the legal action against former premier Adrian Nastase started after his fellow party members “ratted him out.”

Basescu said he thought it would be high time he replied to Nastase, who, for three years, has been “constantly rambling about” how the head of the state is behind his file.

“Nastase’s file started after his own party colleagues ratted him out. Sechelariu was the snitch,” Basescu said.

Romanian prosecutors in January indicted former premier Adrian Nastase on charges of embezzling $2 million in state cash to finance his presidential election campaign in 2004.

Nastase denied any wrongdoing, saying the charges against him are baseless and politically motivated.
