Teodor Melescanu, nominee for Justice Minister, Radu Stroe for Defence

Liberals yesterday brought to a halt the crisis at the Justice Ministry, with the party’s Central Political Bureau dropping Norica Nicolai’s nomination which they have staunchly supported thus far and proposing interim Teodor Melescanu for Justice Minister instead. Melescanu, who is the current Defence Minister, was nominated for Justice Minister by secret ballot, with two members opposing his nomination. The National Liberal Party (PNL) was just as quick in finding Melescanu’s successor at the Defence Ministry, with Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu announcing Radu Stroe, a former Government General Secretary, the current chairman of the parliamentary Commission monitoring the activity of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), as the nominee for Melescanu’s current post.

The PM said that Melescanu’s nomination for Justice Minister follows an interimship proving his ability of being a responsible minister. ‘If Romania has a problem, then Justice is it. Teodor Melescanu coped very well with his duties at the Justice Ministry throughout this period,” Tariceanu said.
