"At least 600 employees will be laid off," said Blejnar adding they will sit for tests followed by an interview.

According to Blejnar, layoffs will target both customs heads and workers.

He said 1,852 customs employees, 1,062 Financial Guard workers and 2,785 employees of county public finance offices have received layoff notices.

End-June, Blejnar announced at least 291 Financial Guard workers would be sacked.

Early June, the Government decided to cut 4,927 positions within ANAF, of which 1,200 are occupied positions, 1,427 National Customs Authority position (of which 600 are occupied) and 713 Financial Guard positions (300 occupied).

Restructuring the tax authority is one of the conditions Romania must observe before the first evaluation of the agreement signed with the International Monetary Fund.
