Romania Recognizes Juan Guaido As Interim President Of Venezuela

Romania’s Presidential Administration announced that the head of state’s decision was made following an “in-depth analysis of the situation, including from political-diplomatic and judicial standpoints”, adding that most EU member-states and other foreign allies of Romania also recognized the opposition leader as president.

Several EU member states, including, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands have recognized the Venezuelan National Assembly chairman as interim president in the past week. However, Italy, Slovakia and Greece have blocked an EU-wide consensus on the matter, as they only declared support for new elections.

The United States and Canada have also recognized Guaido, while on the other hand Russia and China voiced their support for current president Nicolas Maduro.

The crisis began in January when the Venezuelan National Assembly invalidated the results of last year’s presidential elections, which took place under suspicions of electoral fraud and were officially won by Maduro. The body declared Guaido, its chairman, as interim president, in accordance with Venezuela’s 1999 Constitution.

Nicolas Maduro has so far rejected the decision and international appeals for new elections, accusing a US-led coup attempt to depose him.
