"The average price hike for the thermal power at the producer is of 9% starting July 1. Electrocentrale Bucuresti benefits from an 11.2% price hike, but some producers countrywide were subject to over 12.5% increase," ANRE vice-president Nicoale Opris said.

ANRE hiked the thermal power prices of Electrocentrale Bucuresti following the producer’s request in that respect in the spring of 2007.

ELCEN last requested a price hike early this year but ANRE asked the company to send more documents grounding fuel-related costs.

The Romanian Government will select an audit company to verify the costs and the possibility to cut expenses at state-owned power producer Electrocentrale Bucuresti, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said Tuesday, at the end of his talks with the mayors in the capital city Bucharest.

Asked whether the audit company checks up ELCEN’s price hike by 11.2%, Opris said the checkup "does not target ANRE".

Tariceanu and the general mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, approached Tuesday in a meeting the issue of increased thermal power prices.

The mayors of the six districts in Bucharest also took part in the meeting.

The director of Bucharest district heating company RADET, Virgil Ramba, said that electricity producer Electrocentrale Bucuresti, a branch of state-owned electricity producer Termoelectrica, sent him a request to hike the gigacalorie price, which he forwarded to Sorin Oprescu.

Ramba refused to say what the possible gigacalorie price hike is.

Oprescu would submit a “notification” this week on the thermal power price hike issue.
